Weenthunga Health Network

Image
I draw inspiration from the team at this dedicated organisation! I have learned so much form Steff Armstrong and Lin Oke in the past 6 years! About 5 years ago through being on the committee of Weenthunga Health Network and taking part in the Careers Health Days I became highly motivated to develop the Respect Centre Care Model. As always my sister Amanda could see the vision and need and was instrumental in the process of thinking and model development. A little more about Weenthunga .... The Weenthunga Health Network is keen to facilitate action at local levels in Victoria. An  Evaluation Report  has recently been released, sharing the outcomes of our Girls Resilience Program in the Bendigo area. This activity, and all of Weenthunga's local activities, aim to address these common objectives, by: Fostering collegial support for  all  individuals in health roles contributing to improved health of First Australians in Victoria Fostering networki...

BlackCard: with people not for people!

The BlackCard:  The BlackCard’s approach requires strengthening ethical behaviour enabling all people to understand and undertake respectful relationships with each other. The Blackcard organisation has finalised their first ever Cultural Capability Framework which will guide the Commonwealth Bank Group. The framework is based on Aboriginal Terms of Reference (ATR) guided by these amazing Blackcard Elders, Aunty Mary Graham and Aunty Lilla Watson. Amanda and I did the 2 day Blackcard Course (accredited) in 2014 and I highly recommend it to anyone keen to progress their cultural advocacy or cultural responsiveness journey! Considering Ultimate Questions from an Indigenous Perspective

One of my readings before a weekend workshop in 2016 with Steff Armstrong Conference presentation by Hannah Rachel Bell http://www.hannahrachelbell.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/ultimate_questions_dialogue.pdf Excerpt - Creatures of the Littoral Zone - "The Chosen Ones" "I said earlier that when there is a tough question I look to Nature. In seeking to answer this question about Absolute Truth, I went for a walk around the base of some cliffs, sat on a dry rock and took in the pounding sea.  Distracted from my ultimate question, I started to notice that once the wave hit, it ran up over the rocks to replenish the myriad of rock pools. As the tide retreated, these were left high and dry. On closer inspection into these pools I discovered so many life forms whose very existence depended on the tidal cycle of dry, wet, dry, wet. They could not survive if they were higher up the cliff on permanently dry land, and neither could they survive in the deep ocean.  They...

The Start of a new Journey in 2015

Starting our new Journey: It is October 2015. We have just completed a small workshop with close work friends and family to explore health needs, the gap and aboriginal culture. Amanda Jackson has a background in Law and is passionate about Human Rights.  Kerrie Thomsen has a background in Occupational Therapy. We are passionate about "community centred practice" and doing something about First Peoples wellness and poor health outcomes through Education, Connection and one day at a time if we have too. A one sentence summary: This means breaking down the barriers for First People's to regain quality of life, health and wellness! Also there is this short video clip ( click here ) which shows in a pictorial way what we created as the new concept and approach of Respect Centred Practice. We have enjoyed the journey to date culminating with this workshop but we have a lot more to do to spread the message on this alternative Model which fits o...
